How to Choose the Right Shipping Box for Your Small Business
20th Oct 2026

Starting a business comes with a lot of decisions. What kind of shipping box to buy probably isn’t one you think much about until you have an order ready to go.
What size do you need? How strong should it be? How much room should you leave for cushioning?
You don’t need to become a packaging expert to get it right. Start with these five questions.
1. What Are You Shipping?
Start with the product itself. Is it lightweight or heavy? Fragile or durable? Is it an unusual shape? Does it already have some protective packaging?
A T-shirt and a coffee mug might fit in similarly sized boxes, but they don’t have the same protection needs. Knowing what you’re shipping will help you narrow down the size and strength of the box, plus what you’ll need to pack with it.
2. How Big Is It?
Corrugated box dimensions on Packaging Price are listed as height × width × depth. Measure your product, then account for any cushioning it may need.
Avoid going too big. An oversized box can require more void fill, take up more storage space, and potentially increase shipping costs. Go too small, and you may not leave enough room to properly protect what’s inside.
The goal is a good fit with enough space for the protection your product needs.
3. How Much Does It Weigh?
Size tells you whether your product fits. Weight helps determine how strong the box should be.
For many lighter shipments, a single-wall box may do the job. Heavier or more fragile products may call for double-wall boxes, while triple-wall boxes are designed for especially heavy or demanding shipments.
You’ll also see ECT and Mullen Test ratings when shopping for corrugated boxes. Both measure box strength in different ways. If you’re unsure which rating you need, ask a packaging expert rather than simply choosing the strongest box available. More strength isn’t always necessary for the job, and it can mean paying for more box than you need.
4. How Much Protection Does It Need?
Think beyond the box itself. Fragile products may need bubble, foam, kraft paper, or another cushioning material to prevent movement and help protect them during shipping.
You’ll also need the right tape to keep everything securely sealed. The weight of the package, the box surface, storage conditions, temperature, and shipping conditions can all affect which tape makes sense.
Think of the box, cushioning, and tape as one packaging setup. Making sure those pieces work together can save you from figuring out what’s missing when you’re trying to get an order out the door.
5. How Many Orders Will You Ship?
When you’re filling your first few orders, buying packaging one shipment at a time may work. As your business grows, it gets less practical.
Pay attention to the box sizes you use most. Keeping those sizes on hand, along with the tape, cushioning, and labels that go with them, can make packing faster and reordering easier.
That’s especially useful if you’re heading into your first holiday season. A busy shipping day is a bad time to discover you’re down to your last box.
